Taking Old Spouting Down Without Making a Mess

Gutter Removal in Wellington

Removing old spouting sounds simple until you are on a ladder with a long length of rusted steel catching the wind. We approach gutter removal in Wellington as the careful dismantling of the existing system, including spouting, brackets, downpipes and outlets, so the fascia can be checked and the new system fitted to a sound base. Done properly, nothing falls on the garden, the cladding isn't scratched, and the old material goes to the right place.

Removal is usually the first step in a replacement rather than a job on its own, but it also comes up when a home is being reclad, when an extension changes the roofline, or when an old run is no longer needed. On older Wellington homes the material itself matters: some spouting and downpipes from past decades were made of asbestos cement, and older paint may contain lead.

What Old Spouting Is Made Of

Before anything comes down, we identify the material, because it decides how the removal is done and where the waste goes afterwards.

Galvanised and prepainted steel

The most familiar spouting on Wellington homes. Old steel spouting is often rusted through at the sole and outlets and can break apart as it comes down, so it is lowered in sections rather than levered off. It goes to metal recycling.

PVC spouting

Plastic spouting turns brittle in UV light and can shatter when the brackets are released. It is lighter to handle but harder to recycle, so it usually goes to landfill unless a local recycling option is available.

Aluminium spouting

Aluminium is light and easy to lower, but long lengths catch the wind and buckle if handled carelessly. Riveted and sealed joints are drilled out or cut rather than torn apart, and the metal is kept separate from steel for recycling.

Asbestos-cement spouting

Some older homes still have spouting or downpipes made of asbestos cement. These are never cut or broken. If testing confirms asbestos, removal is carried out by a WorkSafe-licensed asbestos removalist under the Health and Safety at Work (Asbestos) Regulations 2016.

Lead-painted items

Spouting, downpipes and fascias on older homes may carry lead-based paint. We avoid dry sanding or scraping that creates dust, lay drop sheets to catch flakes, and keep paint debris out of gardens and stormwater drains.

Copper and cast iron

Less common, but found on some heritage homes and commercial buildings. Both go to recycling. Cast iron is heavy and brittle, so it needs controlled lowering, sometimes on ropes, rather than being dropped.

How a Removal Is Done

We set up safe access first. On single-storey homes that may mean ladders and roof anchors; on two-storey or hillside homes it often means scaffold or temporary edge protection meeting AS/NZS 4994. Downpipes are detached from the stormwater connection, which is capped so debris can't get in, and the spouting is unclipped bracket by bracket and lowered in manageable lengths.

With the spouting off, the fascia is fully exposed for the first time in years. We check it for rot, especially behind old outlets and at corners, and for splits and holes left by old brackets. This is the moment to fix fascia problems, because once new spouting goes on, the timber is covered again. Our fascia and soffit repair work fits straight into this step.

Planning What Happens Next

We plan removal and replacement together so the house is not left without spouting longer than necessary, which matters with Wellington weather changing by the hour. On most homes the old system comes off one elevation at a time and the new spouting follows behind. If the new system is a different profile, we confirm the fascia and bracket positions suit it before removal starts. See gutter replacement for how the new system goes up, or gutter installation for new builds and additions.

If spouting is being removed for good, for instance on a wall being reclad or a roof area that now drains elsewhere, we make sure any remaining downpipe connections are capped, sealed or rerouted, and that water from the roof still has a defined path to the ground. A roof edge left without drainage invites rot and wet foundations.

Can I remove old spouting myself?

If it's single storey, ordinary steel or PVC, and you're confident on a ladder, it can be done, but ladder falls are a real hazard and spouting full of wet debris is heavier than it looks. If the spouting could be asbestos cement, or the paint could contain lead, don't cut, break or sand it. Have it tested first.

How do I know if my spouting contains asbestos?

You can't tell reliably by looking. Asbestos-cement spouting tends to be thick, grey and rigid, and is found mainly on older homes, but modern fibre-cement can look similar. A sample tested by an accredited laboratory gives the answer. If it's positive, removal is carried out by a WorkSafe-licensed asbestos removalist.

What happens to the old spouting?

Metal spouting, brackets and downpipes go to metal recycling. PVC and other non-recyclable material goes to landfill in the normal way. Asbestos waste is wrapped, labelled and disposed of by the licensed removalist at an approved facility. Lead paint flakes are collected and kept out of soil and stormwater.

Will removing the spouting damage my fascia or cladding?

Careful removal shouldn't, but it will reveal any damage that is already there. Old brackets sometimes leave holes or splits, and rot hidden behind the spouting becomes visible. We'll show you what we find and quote any repairs before the new spouting goes on.

Do you remove gutters without replacing them?

Yes, where there's a reason, such as a recladding project, a demolished lean-to, or a roof change that makes a run redundant. We make sure the roof water still has a proper path to the ground, and that any open stormwater connections are capped or reused rather than left exposed.
