Acrylic Roof Paint
Acrylic roof paint is water-based and environmentally friendly. It provides a durable and flexible finish that can withstand New Zealand’s diverse weather conditions. Acrylic paints are easy to apply, dry quickly, and offer excellent UV resistance, making them ideal for protecting roofs from sun damage. They are available in various colors, allowing homeowners to choose shades that complement their homes’ aesthetics. Acrylic roof paints are known for their longevity and can be applied to various roof materials, including metal, concrete tiles, and asphalt shingles.
Bituminous Roof Paint
Bituminous roof paint, also known as bitumen paint or asphalt paint, is a solvent-based coating. It contains bitumen, a substance derived from crude oil, making it highly water-resistant and durable. Bituminous roof paint forms a protective layer that effectively seals and waterproofs roofs. It’s commonly used on flat or low-slope roofs and provides excellent resistance against water penetration. This type of paint is particularly useful in areas with high rainfall or frequent storms.
Elastomeric Roof Coating
Elastomeric roof coatings are highly flexible and elastic, allowing them to expand and contract with the roof’s movement without cracking. These coatings are typically made from acrylic polymers, offering exceptional durability and weather resistance. Elastomeric coatings create a seamless membrane on the roof’s surface, making them an excellent choice for flat or low-pitched roofs. They provide excellent waterproofing and UV protection, enhancing the roof’s longevity. Elastomeric roof coatings are especially beneficial for roofs that experience thermal expansion and contraction, common in New Zealand’s varying climates.
Metal Roof Paint
Metal roof paints are specifically formulated for metal roofing materials such as steel and aluminum. These paints offer corrosion resistance, protecting metal roofs from rust and degradation. They provide a strong adhesion to metal surfaces and can withstand the harsh coastal environments prevalent in many parts of New Zealand. Metal roof paints often contain additives that enhance UV resistance, preventing color fading and maintaining the roof’s appearance over time. Additionally, they are designed to handle the thermal expansion and contraction that metal roofs experience, ensuring long-lasting protection.
Tile Roof Paint and Sealers
Concrete tiles are porous, so they are usually sealed or primed first to bind the surface and stop the topcoat soaking in unevenly. A water-based acrylic made for masonry then goes on in two coats. Before painting, the tiles are cleaned, broken tiles are replaced and ridge pointing is repaired, because paint will not hide cracks or secure loose ridges. Terracotta is usually left unpainted, as its colour runs right through the clay.
Primers for Metal Roofs
Primer is the foundation of a lasting paint system on metal. Rusted areas are wire-brushed back to sound steel and spot-primed with an anti-corrosive primer, while bare galvanised or ZINCALUME steel needs a primer designed to grip that surface. Using the primer and topcoat from the same manufacturer's system matters, because the two are designed to bond together, and mixing products can lead to peeling or blistering that is hard to put right later.
